Beginning June 2000, Marin County High school students were offered a unique internship program. Students were teamed with mentors in the fields of architecture, mechanical engineering, construction and city planning who collaborated in the design and construction of a single project. In this "Community Classroom" students participated in meaningful projects working with top level professional in Marin and San Francisco.

The goal of this ongoing program is to develop the creative skills and critical reasoning of secondary youth by actually working on civic projects or a building under construction. The Architectural Foundation of San Francisco conducts this program in collaboration with the Marin County Office of Education Regional Occupational Program (ROP).

Opportunities for internships for the 2000-2001 school year will involve significant projects where students will work side by side with top architects, designers, engineers, contractors and planners on:

- The new Marin Community Foundation Building in San Rafael

-Landscape Design for the Marin Art and Garden Center

- The redesign of the San Rafael Library

- Other major projects in Marin and San Francisco

Build Marin internships will involve direct student resea4rch and problem solving surrounding actual work-place issues and interactive project based learning. This is an outstanding opportunity for:

- Career Exploration

- Senior Projects

- Enhancement of a College Application

- Letters of Reference-

- Up to Ten units of elective credit per semester

Students will spend 5 to 10 hours a week, mostly at job sites, for five or more credits in a semester. Students will also do one research project. Build Marin is recommended for college prep students with an int4erest in any of the following areas:

-Architecture -Design Engineering -Computers

-History -Civics -Web Design
