STUDENT__________________________________________________ COURSE 10040: ENGLISH 4

I. Student Learning Outcomes
All Tamiscal courses share the purpose of helping the student read, write, speak, and solve problems effectively. All courses with in the English department are designed to aid the students in developing to a higher level his skills in organizing his ideas, interpreting and applying what he reads, and in choosing words, punctuation and spellings-that will allow him to explain to others his theories and ideas about what he reads and about life.

Students will demonstrate further academic research skills necessary for writing papers that effectively integrate material from outside resources into the central idea of the essay, develop the skill to reason cogently by developing sound premises and conclusions that depend on convincing evidence for support, to interpret theme and explain how it provides insight into life, examine ethical values, learn to make use of professional literary criticism in evaluating literature.

II. Activities

1. Major papers developed around complex reading assignments to demonstrate a critical analysis that uses difficult theoretical techniques.
2. Use comparison and contrast and cause and effect.
3. Assemble the Sophomore Portfolio, revise current and past written work as needed.

Reading selections may include Lord of the Flies, Taming of the Shrew, Macbeth, This Boy’s Life and other works.

III. Resources
In addition to the textbook, students are expected to utilize Tamiscal Homepage links, the internet, Electric Library, District and County libraries, CDs, Videos, and relevant media.

IV. Assessment
Assignments for this course will include preparation for meeting District Outcome Assessments. For the purposes of evaluation and grading during the course, the following methods may be used: weekly assignments; projects; laboratory work; written reports; presentations; participation; quizzes and exams. Students will be informed of the grading criteria at the beginning of each semester.

Students enrolled in this course will participate in all required District Assessments.

V. Duration
The agreement is effective until the end of the current semester.

VI. Progress Monitoring
Progress will be monitored at weekly meetings; therefore, attendance is required. Missed appointments, tests, and assignments will result in partial course credits and may result in required attendance to Supervised Independent Study (SIS).

Grades and credits will be reported at the quarter and end of the semester.
