INDEPENDENT STUDY COURSE AGREEMENT

STUDENT___________________________________ COURSE 10330: CONTEMPORARY LITERATURE

I. Student Learning Outcomes
All Tamiscal courses share the purpose of helping the student read, write, speak, and solve problems effectively. All courses within the English department are designed to aid the students in developing a higher level in the skills of organizing ideas, interpreting and applying what is read and expressing themselves to others accurately and effectively.

Students will examine literature of the last twenty years in particular the last three years through the prism of critical reading and writing. They will demonstrate abilities to examine study and identify the major forces in culture that have influenced life and thought in recent times. Students will be able to use the use critical thinking skills of questioning, interpreting and analyzing in both written and oral work to analyze and propose solutions to contemporary issues using a variety of perspectives

 

II. Activities

  1. to read and view representative works of authors, novels, poetry, short stories, plays and essays from the final decades of the 20th century and the first decade of the 21st century.
  2. to write a major paper (at least 2 per semester), and additional minor papers on a weekly basis.
  3. to deliver an oral presentation of selected work of your choice and be able to discuss in depth a particular author or work on a weekly basis.

III. Resources
In addition to the textbook, students are expected to utilize Tamiscal Homepage links, the internet, Electric Library, District and County libraries, CDs, videos, and relevant media.

IV. Assessment
Assignments for this course will include preparation for meeting District Outcome Assessments. For the purposes of evaluation and grading during the course, the following methods may be used: weekly assignments; projects; laboratory work; written reports; presentations; participation; quizzes and exams. Students will be informed of the grading criteria at the beginning of each semester.

Students enrolled in this course will participate in all required District Assessments.

V. Duration
The agreement is effective until the end of the current semester.

VI. Progress Monitoring
Progress will be monitored at weekly meetings; therefore, attendance is required. Missed appointments, tests, and assignments will result in partial course credits and may result in required attendance to Supervised Independent Study (SIS).

Grades and credits will be reported at the quarter and end of the semester.
