NEWS: Tamiscal welcomes its new Principal! UPDATE: The date for Back to School Night has changed to Sept. 15th, 6:30 to 7:30.
Tamiscal is the independent study/alternative high school
that serves the students of the Tamalpais Union High School District. Our
mission is to facilitate student learning in a setting that meets the needs of
students who have health issues, significant off- campus activities, necessary
employment, family obligations or learning styles that make attendance at a
comprehensive site impractical.
We offer our students flexible schedules and require
significantly less on- campus time than comprehensive sites. Students complete
the bulk of their work independently and then meet with a core teacher once a
week to review assignments, have work evaluated and get direct instruction.
The typical homework load is between four and five hours per week per subject. Math
and science are generally taught in small group classes that meet on campus
once or twice per week.
Tamiscal’s academic program is as rigorous as those at the
comprehensive sites and our students are accepted to colleges in numbers
equivalent to those schools.
Tamiscal is also home to Team, a year- long
experiential/ outdoor education program open to juniors from the comprehensive
sites. Admission to Team is also by application and is limited to 25
students per year.
By necessity, Tamiscal offers fewer extracurricular
activities than other high schools but our students often participate in
activities or take classes at their comprehensive schools.
Admission to Tamiscal is by application only. The majority
of our 117 students are juniors and seniors who have previously attended a
comprehensive school within the district.
